Ideas for DP Brand

Hey y'all

The promo team is looking for input from the class before we do any designing. We would like to hear any broad ideas or concepts that might suit our exhibition. Don't worry about specifics like typefaces and such, just brainstorming. Hopefully everyone can discuss it here on the blog.

Feel free to post any sketches or other stuff that might help.

Thanks!

So basicly we need a direction for a visual id which can represent an array of 17 vastly different projects as well as the "personality" of the senior class. not going to be easy

some initial thoughts on how we might go about doing this is maybe we shouldn't do a clean, trendy id, it seems like this class is too varied for something uber slick and refined, we could have something which shows some sort of internal conflict within itself, or some kind of system which the content or meaning is not so immediate, but offers a plethora of different messages. It could have all these different interpretations and if we made it kinetic the system could be in a constant content flux, for the remainder of it's short life. I think that we should be seeking to challenge our audience, since I'm assuming that our audience is first the design community, second kcai, and third the crossroads art scene.

well thats all i have for now but stay tuned for more...

I think it could be interesting to use a lot of Spirograph imagery.

I think it does a good job of explaining the complexity and organization of the topics we learn throughout our 3 years in the department. It also has a really good level of sophistication to it. It does look a bit 80s, but I think we could use that to our advantage, drawing the Urban Outfitter crowd with bold and bright colors.

mmmm... complexity

i liked matt's idea last semester of the chart that connects similarities between our projects.

remember the deadline for the postcards to the printer is the 15th. please post as much as you can this weekend so we can get the visuals started!!!

p.s. if you are very adamant about getting you input into this project, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I agree with both Matt & the g-man. Something that has more life and complexity to it would be a great representation of our class. Of course, it would be good to have some kind of cleanliness in the design, probably a nice modern typeface. Obviously, we want to stay away from pictures of the class beacuse, it's tired. Bright color(s), boldness, and complexity with a hit of mess. Hopefully we can steer it away from looking like trendy street art. Maybe, we just create an interesting logotype that could go on postcards of crops of our work? That's what I've got

well color sounds good... i think matt described it well.... what im wondering is if we want to start with a title for our DP and then work from there (at least sometimes i work better like that.) so i was trying to think about something that would fit us. So far i was thinking of a boundary between rough and final drafts, something that correlates change and growth as well as our time and skill. I was thinking something like "A foundation of principles" or "concscience" . what do you think?

If we want a title for the exhibition (which I'm unsure we need), I was thinking about "No Easy Answer." It seems that we've spent x number of years learning what design is, and yet it's hard for (lay)people to understand what it is we do. So the exhibition is essentially an answer to "what is design?," especially with regard to our degree projects.

Or maybe I'm just waxing stupid.

I like the idea of bold color, and I've been looking at visualcomplexity.com for ideas about "complexity" and how to link our various question topics. I think the idea of an info graphic like Takach suggested last year would be interesting.

i think the identity should be based on each of us having a mark or symbol to represent us on a circle, like a childs toy that spins and tells you the sound of that animal. so our class symbol would be a circle of our symbols, with one highlighted or larger for each time the design or wordage is referencing an individual.

what if we bought a spirograph and everyone got to make their own shape?

I really like that line of thinking, Rhianna. But, perhaps the structures need to link up with each other in an interesting way. Part of the magic of the spirograph is it's unity and the ability for multiple things to work together (independently) to produce one solid, textural image.

i love the spiralgraph idea.... maybe we start with a whole, using 17 "swings" around the graph, and each person gets to pick a "swing" as their identity or representation...eh?

Sorry this is late guys, but here's my little idea.

What if we create a grid composition, and then each of us can design our own interpretation of our projects, and in the end, kind of connect them together much like a quilting bee? I like the idea of having one grid and the content change around it, because you can do a lot, even with that limitation. It will also represent the complexity and how broad our interests and projects are, and unify them in a cohesive structure.

If that makes any sense.

i've been thinking about possible titles.
i think it should be short because we also need to mention stuff like:

kcai
school of design
graphic design
senior degree project

here's what i have:
culmination
collective
apex
turning point
pinnacle

some of these sound like bad band names...

anyways, thanks for the ideas, we are meeting tomorrow and we'll take a look at what everyone has posted and figure something out.

whether we literally use a Spirograph or not i like the idea of binding together elements composed by everyone individually.

on the other hand, that strikes me as kind of an obvious way to respond to a show of nineteen people's work. i'm kinda more inclined to go to the opposite extreme and just have some kind of distinctive logo or logotype designed by one or two people. conflict and inconsistency, like matt was talking about, could bring out the idea of variety without actually using fragments of everyone's work.

might also be worth trying to identify common threads that connect the different projects. sustainability and environmental concerns are the most obvious one but i think there are others.

i still like graphic design 08 for a title. everything else sounds like we're trying too hard.

TITLES....

i agree with the Jugdernaut that if we choose a more distinct title is needs to be really fucking good. words like "culmination," or "pinnacle," are the kind of $5 words that kathleen will be spitting out on may 17. so if we do choose something along those lines it does need to be very definitive and i think that staying away from graduation themed words would be a good place to start, maybe some designerly pun could be fun, otherwise falling back on GraphicDesign 08, or GD08 is acceptable to me. I'm bad at making titles, but some random ideas are

Restoring the Color
OverSaturated
Color Outside the Lines
Fractal Textures
Design Disorders
Eccentrical Ecclecticism

hopefully someone has something better

But back to spirorgraphs for a moment, this person did something with these shapes that is way better than what we can do, so sad...

i guess i just feel like the name should have something to do with us specifically rather than just graphic design in general.

but you needn't worry over any of my cheesy ideas because it's actually up to the belger team to decide.

I feel the same as some others, as in that we need to reflect each persons project abit to give with a simple of what it is going to be. although i think it should also stand out and catch ones eye with a modern typeface or even create our own logo type with bold colors that pop off the page......

justin r said...

It's final. Here's the title the Belger and Promo teams decided on:

Collective 08: KCAI Graphic Design Senior Exhibition

aimee brodbeck said...

seniors here is the description....

"The Collective displays the body of work producted by senior designers from the Kansas City Art Institute. WOrks include various aread of visual and conceptual strategies as well as a self-defined project exploring the graphic designer's role in education, entertainment or environment." thanks !!!

rweilert said...

a couple things:

the title is "collective:08"

"producted" isn't a word, but also i don't like this word usage, it sounds like we are a design machine. what about something like "created."

the last sentence could be elaborated into a few sentences, which might make it more understandable.

i'm not sure what the requirements for the belger paragraph are but i think we should have something a little longer for the website.

tina said...

Hey guys

maybe i'm a wee bit tired, or i don't understand what's goin on...but i can't make a new post!

so I was wondering if anyone from the Belger team has the info to where i can send these images

:D

Here's the model of the graphs we've decided upon. This condensed version will be on the postcard, an expanded version on the poster, and hopefully a fully explained one on the website.
