I thought I would bring up a small idea that I had on my drive home from Arkansas. I don't quite know what the Belger team is up to, but, if you guys have already thought of this, just tell me. What if we dyed a batch of string hot pink and ran it from each person's space to another (relating to our publicized graph). We could make some interesting connections and really liven up the space more.
Rhianna also had a good idea of taping a grid on the ground.
I dunno.... what do you guys think?

i think the string might become a hazard, but the tape sounds more manageable. the main problem i see with this is setting up peoples place ahead of time to their relation to the others. but it would be interesting to change up the space and the flow of people once the exhibit opens, because going around the rectangular format of the room can seem so repetitive to the audience thats walked 10 other rooms that night.
this could work, its a steep design challenge though especialy with all the location requirements of individuals and all, but good luck making it,just make sure this isn't a fire hazard or anything.
i don't understand what you mean, ryan. we will have everyone's planned out.
i imagined the strings being overhead which shouldn't be a hazard. everyone's partition or space will be connected according to some other set of critieria.
i will help make it, i think it would be amazing.
i guess i was thinking that perhaps their relationships might conflict with how far a thread would need to travel. and also trying to set some sort of linear movement through the space instead of getting the viewer confused and lost in their exploration of the space.
Would it be possible to even plot out where a person will hang their work in reference to our grid, or do you think that would be too complicated, or too many people will need a specific area to put up their work in? I think that would be neat, especially with the tape on the ground.
I'm not sure I like the string idea, but I definitely like the tape.
The reasoning for the string is to visually suggest a lower "ceiling." The ceiling is so high in the space, that it makes the work feel small sometimes. Granted, our new "ceiling" would be very vague, it would still provide a boundary line to hone their eyes down to the work at their level.
So let me see if I have this right....
Hot pink string that is suppose to draw connections between projects. It is also suppose to suggest a lower ceiling which would keep the attention on our work...and again the string would be hot pink?
This sounds like a project that could not be executed effectively as an afterthought. If people find they have enough time on there hands to plan and execute this, then please, by all means go right ahead. However, what happens when everyone starts staring at the ceiling instead of our work?
I don't think that running strings is profound enough for someone to sit there and ponder over it for hours. It's creating an environment that that'll hopefully become subconscious after five minutes. Plus, it shows that we as designers are great at creating experiences.
Yeah, Im thinking that the hanging strings could be bad! Plus i dont know how the belger would like that idea too. but I think that the grid on the floor or connecting the projects could be interesting. Also keep in mind we have a hella lot of shit to do that we have not even got to yet..... So the question is: Is there really time for all the extra stuff and to make it work and look good?
"This Is Not A Post"
"This Is Not A Store"
AND.... recreating Marcel Duchamp's "Mile Of String"
Is Not A Good Idea.
(especially since it was recreated only one year ago by Selfridges in London)
Something tells me that other artist in Kansas City besides myself read Wired Magazine.
I agree with clily. I see the purpose of the gallery as being a place to present our work to the public. I think that it would detract focus from our work. I think that combining all the projects into one installation gets away from the idea of us each going our own direction for the senior projects. I wouldn't like people trying to make a connection from my project to anybody else's. In this case I think each body work should be presented by itself.
Trying to design an experience is a good idea though. But some individual projects are trying to create their own experience. It would be taking away from those specific projects.
I say keep it simple and clean. The work should be the only focus. Not strings from the ceiling or tape on the floor.
Although filling it with plastic balls like a ball pit from chuck-e-cheese would be pretty cool.
no string please!!!!! TOO MUCH VISUAL NOISE! ICK! but the idea of the ground thing, could be cool! i just know that through the course of the month strings will fall down from the heavens and become annoying.
i think the idea is to break up this giant space which, if you haven't seen it, is a little worrisome. the concern is that our work is going to look tiny in this warehouse.
think about how awkward the work looked last year in its space. in my opinion, the room was too big and everything was too spaced out.
i hope someone on the belger team has actually been to the belger. maybe we could generate some other ideas to tackle this problem.
